North on the Tasman Highway via Sorell, Orford and Triabunna. Stop in Swansea for a coffee. Then fifteen minutes more north, follow the signs to Dolphin Sands. The shack is at the end of Yellow Sandbanks Road.

South-east on the Tasman Highway via Conara, Avoca and St Marys. Drop down to the coast at Bicheno (worth a stop for the blowhole). Then forty minutes south to the Dolphin Sands turn.
35 minutes · 38 km
South on the Coles Bay Road, back to the Tasman Highway, ten minutes south, then take the Dolphin Sands turn. The most popular drive -- many of our visitors are staying in Freycinet and the shack is the morning detour they'd already heard about.
Make a weekend of it. Sand Shacks Dolphin Sands is close to the shack, with the bay in earshot and Nine Mile Beach a hundred metres away. Quiet, comfortable, and exactly the place to come back to after a dozen golds with a Tasmanian Riesling.
Book accommodation through Sand Shacks, then plan the shack tour, tasting or lunch with Melshell separately.
"You can sit at picnic tables overlooking the edge of Moulting Lagoon and devour your dozen or more while surrounded by huge mounds of shells that are the testament to past consumption by many happy customers."
-- Alison P, Tranmere
The Great Eastern Drive is one of Australia's most photographed coastlines. The shack is a stop on the way to (or back from) some of Tasmania's best beaches, vineyards, and walks.
A 9km stretch of white sand right behind the farm. The Nine Mile Beach Walk is one of the most reviewed walks in the region.
The Wineglass Bay walk is 35 minutes north. Devil's Corner cellar door sits on the way, with the most photographed wine deck in Tasmania.
The vineyards that pour by the glass at the shack are five and twenty minutes south. The Rieslings, in particular, are worth a tasting flight.
Dolphin Sands is, geographically, a long sand spit. The shoreline is wild, white and almost always empty. Sunrise is best.
A mandatory stop on the east coast.
Walk-ins welcome at the shack. For a tour, a group booking, nearby stay question or wholesale supply enquiry, call or drop us a line.
For tour bookings, group enquiries, nearby stay questions, weddings, or anything else, the farm can come back to you during business hours.
